Title IX

In keeping with its long-standing traditions and policies, the University of Chicago considers students, employees, and applicants for admission or employment, and those seeking access to programs on the basis of individual merit. The University, therefore, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, veteran status, or other protected classes under the law.

The University’s policy is consistent with federal, state, and local regulations governing non-discrimination and harassment including, but not limited to: the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (as amended), the Americans with Disabilities Act (as amended), the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1991, Executive Order 11246, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 (as amended), the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (as amended), Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (as amended), Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, the Illinois Human Rights Act, the City of Chicago Human Rights Ordinance, and the Cook County Human Rights Ordinance.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing regulations, prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities operated by recipients of Federal financial assistance. Sexual harassment of students, which includes acts of sexual violence, is a form of sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX. Title IX Coordinator for the University

The University official responsible for coordinating compliance with the Policy on Harassment, Discrimination, and Sexual Misconduct is Bridget Collier, Associate Provost for Equal Opportunity Programs. She also serves as the University’s Title IX Coordinator, Affirmative Action Officer, and Section 504/ADA Coordinator.

Please contact Bridget to raise concerns or to file a complaint regarding a faculty member, other academic appointee, or a staff member under the Harassment, Discrimination, and Sexual Misconduct Policy (including a Title IX complaint), or for general questions regarding this Policy.

As the University’s Title IX Coordinator, Bridget provides academic units and staff offices with sexual harassment and discrimination training. The training covers the University’s Policy on Harassment, Discrimination, and Sexual Misconduct, including the processes, reporting obligations, and resources contained therein. Discrimination and Sexual Misconduct Policy

Discrimination and sexual misconduct compromise the integrity of the University. It is the intention of the University to take necessary action to prevent, correct, and, where indicated, discipline harassment. Read the Policy on Harassment, Discrimination, and Sexual Misconduct.

Student Disciplinary Systems

Every student bears responsibility for his or her misconduct, regardless of whether the misconduct takes place in a group setting or as a member or a group. However, individual misconduct may also be, at least in part, the responsibility of other members of the group and the group leadership. Misconduct by individual members of a group thus may become a matter for disciplinary action against the individual, the group, and the group leadership.
